Math 8
Math 8 develops computational fluency and conceptual understanding through instruction and practice. The curriculum focuses on investigating, representing, and writing functions to model mathematical and real-world situations. Students will gain a deep understanding of functions, linear models, strong algebraic skills for high school mathematics, and foundational knowledge in geometry and advanced number concepts.
Key Topics
- Functions and Modeling: Investigating, representing, and writing functions to model real-world situations, with a deep exploration of linear functions.
- Algebraic Equations and Systems: Developing strong skills in solving linear equations, equations involving roots, and systems of linear equations.
- Numbers and Notation: Covering exponents, powers of ten, scientific notation, and an introduction to irrational numbers.
- Geometry: Learning about transformations, congruence, similarity, the Pythagorean theorem, angle relationships, and volumes of cylinders, cones, and spheres.
- Statistics: Creating scatter plots and modeling data with linear functions to analyze relationships.
Learning Outcomes
Students will gain a deep understanding of functions and be able to write and analyze linear models to represent complex situations and data sets. They will develop strong algebraic skills necessary for high school mathematics, including solving advanced equations, and will acquire foundational knowledge in geometry (including the Pythagorean theorem) and advanced number concepts.
Grade Level
- Middle School (Grade 8)
Audience
Students entering the 8th grade math curriculum, students preparing for Algebra I in high school, and students seeking to develop a strong mathematical base in functions, equations, and geometry.
