Math Foundations

Math Foundations is a structured 1-credit course designed to give students the essential computational skills and deep conceptual understanding they need to succeed in all high school-level math classes. The courses aim to fill any gaps in a student’s basic knowledge to ensure they have a rock-solid foundation while also teaching them general problem-solving strategies and how to apply math concepts to real, everyday situations, building both skill and confidence for future academic challenges.

Key Topics

  • Problem-Solving: Development of general problem-solving strategies across various contexts.
  • Whole Numbers: Comprehensive review and mastery of multiplication and division.
  • Rational Numbers: In-depth study of fractions and decimals and their application to word problems.
  • Geometry: Introduction to 2-D and 3-D concepts, including perimeter, area, volume, and surface area
  • Data Analysis: Working with visual tools such as frequency tables, line plots, and histograms.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to apply fundamental math concepts (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals) to solve real-world problems.
  • Students will demonstrate foundational knowledge of geometric concepts, including calculation of area and volume.
  • Students will be able to organize, interpret, and analyze data using various visual tools
  • Students will utilize both formative and summative assessments to identify weaknesses and track progress toward mathematical proficiency
