Science 8
This integrated science course relies on investigations and evidence to describe the natural events that occur around us. The curriculum is divided into two main areas: genes, inheritance, evolution, and energy resources, and climate change, waves, and technology’s environmental impact. This course uses modeling and engineering challenges to help students develop a strong understanding of core scientific concepts and their real-world applications.
Key Topics
- Genes, Inheritance, and Evolution
- Energy Resources and Transformations
- Climate Change and Solutions
- Waves and Technology Development
- Light and Matter Interactions in Space
- Human and Technology Impact on Earth
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion, students will explain how genes transfer traits, use evidence to support evolutionary lineages, and differentiate between renewable and nonrenewable energy resources. They will model the greenhouse effect, interpret models of light/matter interactions, and engineer solutions, such as designing a device to harness solar energy or a building to withstand an earthquake.
Grade Level
- Middle School (Grades 8)
Audience
Students entering the 8th grade curriculum, students who want to develop strong scientific inquiry and evidence-based reasoning skills, and students preparing for success in high school science courses like Biology and Earth Science.
